it’s too soon for me to be grown

My dad once told me my eyes were Apple Bay sea green
even at eight the thought was beautiful. Leaving Tortola
at the end of a week every year
was my first heartbreak. I’ve been afraid of mirrors my whole life
but then in winter I stared into my own eyes
till they burned with salt as I blinked awake
and took in the blurry world under the rolling waves
of the Caribbean Sea.
